Not what I was expecting! It definitely takes you for a ride and I wasn't sure exactly which of the possible paths we were going to end up finishing on. The audiobook narrator did a great job distinguishing between a lot of different voices, too, which is appreciated.

WOW…. this book is going to haunt my dreams for the next year! I can’t praise it enough. The gritty, dark atmosphere was masterfully crafted, and I especially appreciated the author’s note at the beginning which really set the tone and gave insight into her inspiration.
At first, I deeply connected with Rachel and found Finn incredibly frustrating. But somewhere around the midpoint, Gunn completely flipped that dynamic. Suddenly, I felt nothing but empathy for Finn and grew to loathe Rachel, and that shift was executed so seamlessly. I absolutely love when an author can develop characters so thoroughly, only to turn your perception of them upside down.
The eerie, unsettling tone lingers throughout, especially with the use of children and haunting villains, which added a chilling layer to the story. There’s a constant feeling that something is hiding in the shadows and this is something you won’t fully uncover until the very end. I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book.

*Thank you to Allison Gunn, Atria Books and Netgalley for the digital copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.

  • The writing wasn’t bad, but it felt a bit bland for horror.
  • The ending would have made for some decent horror, but none of the characters were likeable, including the protagonist, and so I couldn’t care less. Let the woods take them all
    which it does
    because everyone kinda sucked.
  • Wanted to like it, and did enjoy some parts (mainly towards the end) but I would not recommend.

This had the potential to be INCREDIBLE, loved the eerie folklore Appalachian vibes, it was def very creepy in places - the audio book was so well done.

However, it just missed the mark a bit for me, one character was introduced just to forward the plot, forgotten about and then popped up again at the end which was a bit weird & not believable. I’d still recommend it widely though as I couldn’t put it down!
