I didn’t enjoy that second book. I had fun with the first one but this one felt so confusing and kind of boring. It was just all over the place and kept switching between two different povs without the chapter telling you whose perspective it was now from. I also didn’t really understand what the point of anything was. The first book wrapped itself up for the most part so I was already wondering what the second book would consist of. To be honest it was much. Really just people fighting and some mystery. There were some interesting backstories for some characters but that was really the only thing I liked. The book just felt pointless overall and everything just ended up pretty much the same at the very end. You could read the first book without ever reading the second which is probably what I would recommend.

While I greatly enjoyed this book and thought it had most everything I loved about book one, I couldn’t quite give this book 5 stars.

I loved this story, the grittiness, and the relationship between Alice and Ella, and Finch’s story.

However, I didn’t enjoy the random switching between first and third person in this book, especially without any warning that we were getting a Finch story.  It took me out of the story multiple times.

Overall, I am so happy to know how this book ends.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Night Country is a fantasy book following Alice as she tries to discover who is killing ex-stories in modern day New York. The story also follows Finch as he fights his way from the Hinterland to return to Alice. I wanted so bad to like this book. I tried to have an open mind and I fought to finish it but I have to say this book is a let down for me. Honestly, the only part I enjoyed was Finch's views and how he navigated his way back to Alice. I felt the book could have been cut down to the last 78% because that is the point the plot moved forward. The majority of the story followed Alice but I felt her roles in the story never pushed the plot forward. I spent more time asking what was the point of the scene rather than drawing conclusions. Also, Alice spent more time reacting to the plot than she did being proactive in the book. I felt the descriptive writing that made the first book a success only showed itself in Finch's point of view. Overall, I gave this book two stars because I do not see myself rereading this book nor recommending this to others.

Wow. I really enjoyed this book way more than The Hazelwood. I did really enjoy the Hazelwood, don’t get me wrong, but this book was just better. The story felt more interesting and very smooth almost? I flew through this book. I loved Finches chapters, I loved the small murder mystery part with Alice. The quotes and the settings and everything were so good. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to continue with the second book after reading The Hazelwood but I’m glad I did!
