it’s beautiful and heartbreaking and it was like some parts and quotes i have highlighted i’ve never related to them so much and it’s weird to know there was someone who wrote what i felt.
marin is this complicated character that you don’t know how to feel about but you want her to feel okay again and then the twist and everything i wasn’t expecting it I love you! stomach dropped and i was like oh god that no it couldn’t make sense.

Beautiful and painful story. The writing punch Marin's grief right to the guts. It's a quick and emotional read.

A beautiful, short, sad story with a hopeful ending. This book is an intimate experience of grief and depression - in her acknowledgements, LaCour mentions that she lost her grandfather. You can feel the deep, well-known emotions that such an event leaves on a person throughout the story. I enjoyed the way LaCour wrote the experience of depression and panic attacks without making them about Having Depression or Having A Panic Attack.

I had gone into this book expecting a bit more of a plot, and perhaps that is what left me feeling slightly frustrated by the slowness of the story. It was still a nice read, but it sometimes teetered on the edge of being too slow. I did enjoy the way that Marin's relationships to Mabel and her family were resolved - it felt realistic, and wasn't tied with a bow for the sake of a happy ending. By letting things be bittersweet at the very end, the entire story was enhanced. However, it was a bit of a slog to get there, and I found myself worried that there would be only bitter up until about 10 pages out from the end of the book.
