This book is a work or art. Marin, the protagonist, takes us on a heart-wrenching and vulnerable journey through the core of her loneliness after her grandfather’s depth. Her relationships with other people and her inner turmoil are phrased so that anyone could find a bit of Marin in themselves. I cried a lot during this book because of how much it resonated with me and how easily I could feel Marin’s deep and thoughtful emotions becoming my own. For anyone struggling with grief/loss/loneliness I highly recommend this book. I rated it 4.5 stars because I wish the character had included and epilogue showing how Marin had grown since the ending.

“I know that I am always lonely, even when surrounded by people, so I let the emptiness in.”
“We are Okay” follows Marin before and after an experience which will change her life forever. Utilizing flashbacks to contrast with present day, Marin tries to reforge a bond with her old best friend Mabel, digging up betrayal and pain throughout the process.
I related to many aspects of the novel, which made it such a compelling read. Grieving was portrayed with such insight, and the relationship dynamics expressed that family can mean more than those who we share blood with. The prose was beautiful as well, which surprised me, because third person narrative is almost always my favorite.”
What bumped down the rating was a few plot holes that were underdeveloped or ignored; but, this novel is character driven so more emphasis was put on emotional  growth.

it’s beautiful and heartbreaking and it was like some parts and quotes i have highlighted i’ve never related to them so much and it’s weird to know there was someone who wrote what i felt.
marin is this complicated character that you don’t know how to feel about but you want her to feel okay again and then the twist and everything i wasn’t expecting it I love you! stomach dropped and i was like oh god that no it couldn’t make sense.
