I had expected this to be a little more fun and a little less traumatizing with the birth stories. HOWEVER, I am amazed at Grady Hendrix’ care and research he put into writing a book about pregnant teenage girls in the 70s as a white male. The witchcraft parts were definitely more creepy than fun - and I couldn’t figure out if we were fans of them or not?? Truthfully, almost every female in the book had a more complex story that made it difficult to assign “villain status” to any of them. Except the men.

Overall it’s a bit creepy and a lot upsetting and, as Hendrix reflects in his afterward, it doesn’t quite figure out all the emotions related to this period of history….but it definitely makes you think about it.

TW if you’ve never been pregnant or are pregnant this will make you very much not want to give birth so…there’s that.

I just really love Grady Hendrix and this might be my new favourite. The first third is a little slow to build but it's so worth it for the pay off.

The narrator of this audiobook completely ruined the experience. I can’t actually tell whether the plot was any good past the howling. Literally. Wails, howls, whimpers… you name it.
