This book was a wild trip, filled with so much war and rage. You got a better look into the politics between the provinces of Nikara, as it’s split into a civil war as people take sides between a centralized empire rule and a Hesperian-backed democratic republic. I thought it was interesting to see how the politics between the nations played out, how they were similar and also different to the real history they were based on.

This book really focuses most on the exploration of Rin’s character and morals. She constantly flips back between being horrified by her actions, unable to deal with the consequences, trying to shift the blame off herself, and being justified in her genocidal tendencies. There’s a question into whether these tendencies are a product of the Phoenix god in her brain or something integral to her, her rage and her desire for revenge.  I felt sometimes like there was an inconsistency in her beliefs, and I had first thought that was carelessness on the author’s part, but there was a specific line highlighting the fact Cike sometimes didn’t even know they were being manipulated by the gods. That made the characterization of her a little more interesting to me, as it’s not explicitly stated every time the Phoenix may be manipulating her and it leaves it up to the reader to guess.

I both enjoyed and got frustrated over the development of Rin’s relationships with other characters. I think this book did a better job of it than the first, and some of the grievances I had went away as they resolved later, but I think they still stand. A lot of the relationship development between Rin and characters like Nezha, Kitay, and the other Cike would happen “off screen” early in the book, and while they did flesh out more later I did still feel like the characters felt far away and changed at the whim of the author rather than developing naturally. During the second half of the book I felt it was done better, which funny enough is the exact same thoughts I had with the first one. Maybe this trilogy is filled with better second halves lol.

I will say that RFK has managed to make a protagonist that’s both so unlikable but so easy to root for. Rin is frustrating, selfish, and just a bit maniacal, but I keep hoping she will make it out onto the other side. She’s FAR from a perfect victim but she is a victim the same, and I like that approach, it’s realistic. The ending of this book really does set up for the finale really well and I’m anticipating which characters will return, what is to come of Rin’s dwindling team, and what will become of Nikara and its opponents.

I would like to say I am fine, but I am not fine. Rebecca, when I catch you. Rebecca, when I catch you...

Rin, no...

I sadly don't think any book of the series is ever gonna top the first (Poppy War), but I still enjoyed it enough to want to finish the series. I would recommend reading it in big chunks rather than occasionally, because the story doesn't hit as much that way whoops. Thank you Daniel for lending this copy to me :)

I really like this book, It's been well over 2 years since I first read it and I didn't realise how much I'd truely forgotten.

Very enjoyable read, still hurts as much as the first time, better than the first one.
Fuck you, Nezha. I can't remember whether she kills Viasra but I really hope she does

All of this FOR WHATTTTTT???
SHE’S RIGHT BACK WHERE SHE STARTED BUT NOW WITH MOST OF HER FRIENDS DEAD!!!!
but fr this book was so well written I LOVED reading about
Kitay’s and Rin’s friendship and how they were not only able to mend what was broken but also become bonded??? tears in my friendship loving eyes I love that they were only thinking of each other in the moment that they each said yes and no.
FUCK NEZHAAAAAA literally fuck that guy i KNEW he was evil but like frrrr??? I hope to soon watch his mother get tortured in front of him or something like literally the white people gotta goooooo.
anyways I was shocked by every plot twist and every new character added as well as every old character that passed
(jaw on the floor at poor little Ramsa may he rest in peace)
ALSO my fav Venka being the absolute BADASS that she is I literally love her sm she’s such good rep for women who have been thru enough shit to not give a single fuck anymore and I just love her for it. Finally it wouldn’t be a review if I didn’t talk about the main character a bit…. girl.
Like I’m so sorry Rin but it’s one thing to get bamboozled once but AGAIN??? She seriously needs to figure out her need to please the authority in her life bc bruhhhh she was pissing me off only listening to the closest man in her vicinity and having absolutely no backbone of her own like i get being a 20 year old woman feeling like a lost little girl and needing guidance but she had so many people around her that were willing and able to give her actually good advice and not just telling her to fight to her death all the time. I think she’s learned her lesson by now but she was really getting on my nerves before lol.
Overall this was such a good book with all of the character flaws and development and twists and turns it really made me feel all the emotions which I always count as a win.

An incredible second book. Truly one of the best fantasy series out there.

oh this was truly phenomenal. with the poppy war already being so strong in so many aspects, I was admittedly a tad bit apprehensive going into the dragon republic as is usually the case whenever I start a sequel - however, it only took a single page for all traces of apprehension I felt prior to starting this to dissipate pretty much instantaneously.

in many ways, the dragon republic is a significant improvement from the poppy war, taking what was already one of the greatest fantasy books I've ever read and somehow going beyond that. any pacing issues I'd had with the first book were practically nonexistent in this instalment, and somehow the characterisation managed to stay as hard-hitting and intricate as it was in the first book. rin is such a fantastic protagonist in, and kuang handles her development from the first book (for better or for worse is up to you to decide), as well as her complicated relationship with altan, with such meticulous care, and not a day has gone by without me thinking about the progression of kitay's arc throughout this book. I've always had a soft spot for him, but the way kuang handled his progression from the boy we see in the poppy war to the hardened, furious version of him in the dragon republic is so incredibly devastating but oh so incredible.

even though this took me literal months to get through, the dragon republic is a fantastic and gut-wrenching sequel that will certainly stick with me for a while. I don't think I'm ready for what might unfold in the burning god (I'm preparing myself for the worst, but I have a feeling that isn't going to help much given kuang's track record).

Alas I have finished this book. I believe this book was paced muches better than the poppy war, lost however certain shock value as the plot was always moving on a similar scale. The characters were abled to be further fleshed out (
albeit most are dead now
) And I believe
through the bonding of Rin and Kitay
we as readers were further able to understand the dynamics of their friendships. Generally Rin's emotions throughout the book were handled in more variety and more vulnerableness was shown from her. Plot wise I was bored sometimes as it felt rather repetitive in the middle. I also believe the foreshadowing was handled very outright (not necessarily bad, just took away any shock), because of this the plot points revealed by the end just weren't surprising. The writing was handled beautifully, as expected.

The handling of European colonisation was shown very well in my opinion. So was the religious propaganda of sorts from the Hesperians. The addition of Augus was also very well put.

I am also very satisfied with the discussions of rape in this book once again. Venka's character now also having an identity as an ally and friend is so good. Daji's also strongly being influenced by rape by a Westerner also helped give a very direct understable reason of her hate.

I all in all enjoyed this book a lot but it doesn't quite top in ratings for me.
