All of this FOR WHATTTTTT???
SHE’S RIGHT BACK WHERE SHE STARTED BUT NOW WITH MOST OF HER FRIENDS DEAD!!!!
but fr this book was so well written I LOVED reading about
Kitay’s and Rin’s friendship and how they were not only able to mend what was broken but also become bonded??? tears in my friendship loving eyes I love that they were only thinking of each other in the moment that they each said yes and no.
FUCK NEZHAAAAAA literally fuck that guy i KNEW he was evil but like frrrr??? I hope to soon watch his mother get tortured in front of him or something like literally the white people gotta goooooo.
anyways I was shocked by every plot twist and every new character added as well as every old character that passed
(jaw on the floor at poor little Ramsa may he rest in peace)
ALSO my fav Venka being the absolute BADASS that she is I literally love her sm she’s such good rep for women who have been thru enough shit to not give a single fuck anymore and I just love her for it. Finally it wouldn’t be a review if I didn’t talk about the main character a bit…. girl.
Like I’m so sorry Rin but it’s one thing to get bamboozled once but AGAIN??? She seriously needs to figure out her need to please the authority in her life bc bruhhhh she was pissing me off only listening to the closest man in her vicinity and having absolutely no backbone of her own like i get being a 20 year old woman feeling like a lost little girl and needing guidance but she had so many people around her that were willing and able to give her actually good advice and not just telling her to fight to her death all the time. I think she’s learned her lesson by now but she was really getting on my nerves before lol.
Overall this was such a good book with all of the character flaws and development and twists and turns it really made me feel all the emotions which I always count as a win.

This was an intense ride from start to finish. Watching Rin’s progression was entertaining — from an out-of-control opium addict to a powerless soldier, and
finally to a flying warrior.
R.F. Kuang’s ability to weave historical parallels into fantasy is unmatched; the Hesperians representing Western, Christian colonizers who only stepped in when it benefited them felt painfully accurate. I feel like this book was even better than the first and less predictable.
I didn’t see Nezha’s betrayal coming at all. And Su Daji’s revelation about who the real villains were? Totally caught me off guard.
I love how this series keeps surprising me, and I can’t wait to see where Rin’s story goes next.

this series is absolutely amazing. these books are frankly so important to read because i love how there's always a turn on how the people in power only want to save themselves, and will do anything to make sure they're on top. i loved seeing rin's development in this book and seeing her come into her power.

Fang runin in this book was clearly a sad girl, she was young and just needed a pillar. I’m glad in the end she finally caught up though

An incredibly impressive follow up to The Poppy War! I really loved how much Kuang dug into the complexities of the politics behind the Dragon Republic and its rebellion. The addition of the Hesperians and the Hinterlanders really expanded the world in a necessary and believable way, and it allowed us to get a better idea of how Rin and other Nikarans situate themselves within their world.

Certain elements felt a little rushed or underdeveloped (do we really think Rin learned how to master those wings in such a short amount of time?), but as a counterbalance we got to see certain side characters develop into much more fully-formed participants in the story. I think Rin's character benefitted from having so many other personalities to play off of—she wasn't able to stay stuck in her own beliefs for very long. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out, for good and ill, as the story continues.

I'm really excited to see how Kuang wraps up the series, and what parts of 20th century Chinese history she'll interweave into the final installment.

rin, I am always going to support because at the end of the day, everyone else kinda deserves it. am loving the venka and rin friendship I am receiving, especially after all that happened in book one.

now....

MY CIKE. THEY'RE ALL GONE. ALL OF THEM. in reality, this is just one of those situations where I would read a fanfiction of the characters (dead) reacting to the story because, despite his flaws, I miss altan. and I will miss the other cike members too now that I've finished book 2.
