As always, love the brutality that is embraced by this series. War is horrible and messy and these books don’t shy away from it

God this book is grim. I thought, after the first one, that things would look up even a little bit, but nope, so so grim. It’s usually very much not my Thing, but the characters are compelling, and even the truly fucked-up ones (in a sea of morally grey characters, mind!) are in a way that feels so realistic it’s terrifying (I’m looking at you Petra). Rin is extremely frustrating, she keeps making stupid decisions and easily avoidable mistakes, but in a very relatable, once again very realistic way, and that makes me want to know her full story. So on we go, and I hope the end of book three will be even marginally happier 🥲

I really like this book, It's been well over 2 years since I first read it and I didn't realise how much I'd truely forgotten.

Very enjoyable read, still hurts as much as the first time, better than the first one.
Fuck you, Nezha. I can't remember whether she kills Viasra but I really hope she does

R.F. KUANG, THE THINGS YOU DO TO MY HEART. A friend told me this trilogy would destroy me, and it became so apparent that would be the case towards the end of this book in particular. But am I ready to maybe be devastated further by reading the third & final book? Uh, you betcha. Kuang's writing is beautiful, yet easy to follow, and I have remained so hooked on her every word. Rin's storyline is so damn fascinating, and I can't wait to follow her and whatever adventures she gets into in Book 3.

Being this is the 2nd in the trilogy, I would advise against reading the following synopsis if you haven't read The Poppy War - continue at your own risk!
After the Third Poppy War, Rin, a shaman haunted by her past, seeks revenge on the Empress who betrayed Nikan. She joins the Dragon Warlord, who plans to overthrow the Empress & create a new Republic, but soon discovers his motives aren’t as noble as they seem. As Rin’s love for Nikan grows, she fears it will drive her to rely on the Phoenix’s deadly power, and she’s willing to sacrifice everything for vengeance & her country.

This sequel deepens the story and takes a few unexpected turns. True to the series, this book keeps you guessing who you can trust and who is friend and who is foe. While ya can't beat the feeling of the original book with it's introduction to a fantastic piece of historical fiction, this is about as good as any sequel gets. I'm just a guy telling, if you haven't introduced yourself to this world, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Brutal but brilliant. I couldn't keep up with how many twists and turns this book took. Definitely does not have the problem lots of middle books in series have. It kept me gripped the whole way through.

I lived lifetimes reading this book. Wow.
Good lord. Can’t Rin catch a break? Insane book. Insane last 2 chapters. Fuck the Yin family. Fuck the Republic. Fuck the Hesperians. I hope Rin builds an unstoppable shamanic army and burns Arlong to the ground.
