took a break a few times because i liked the other things i was reading better.
the magical conflict is hard for me to follow and imagine. this was the case for the last book too. i’m not sure if that’s her writing style of if it’s because it’s YA.
i think i will read something else of hers before i decide if i’ll finish with akata woman or not. i’d be interested in learning more about the nimm though.

I like the setting and world building so much that I'm willing to overlook a weak plot, flat characters, and a weird take on disability representation.

The prominent romantic relationship between a 13 yr old girl and an 18 year old college student was highly suspect. Especially with the repeated descriptions of just HOW TINY she was and HOW BIG and JACKED he is from weightlifting all the time. But don't worry guys. This girl is ~quirky~ and her age is kept a secret. So it's established that she's definitely either 12 but could also be as old as 15.
Considering the rest of the coven is 13 with the American being 14, 13 makes sense ..... The whole thing was unnecessary to character development or plot and was a disturbing inclusion to a MG/YA book.

I honestly loved this so much!! Even more than the first!! The characters continue to grow & develop their relationships which I loved to see whether platonic or romantic! I also love that the romances aren’t the main point but strengthen the plot. The plot was also engaging and interesting and sets up a third book nicely & I’m excited to see what that one will hold! I also love how much family plays a role in this book & that the brothers are becoming a bigger part of the story because they’re great!!! This world is just so captivating and I can’t get enough!!

I love this series!

Easy to get lost in this really good story telling.

The pacing is slower in this book and the plot doesn’t really move along or build like in the first book. More secrets, more young teens being dumb young teens. The Nsibidi language evolves a bit and is very cool, as does some parts of the book. Some of the most realistic parts are the most frustrating- selfish gaze & sexism. Still better than HP tho.
