Y’all can’t be serious. Kingfisher gave us nothing and yall ATE that up? I’m genuinely not sure if we read the same book. Obviously this book just wasn’t for me ig, but the way everyone was hyping Kingfisher up I was expecting SOOO much more

Okay. So I've seen. This all over socials and people saying to read it.
It honestly did not disappoint. The last few hundred pages had me HOOKED. I cannot wait for the author to release book 2... Whenever that will be, I will be waiting!

I'm going to be honest I almost DNF'd this one. The first 70-75% of this book was tedious to say the least. The book is over 600 pages, and nothing really happened except in the last 100-ish pages. The plot that happened though, wasn't really a surprise and I felt like I was just being told the story. The big turn around to love Kingfisher was a let down to be honest, and the main character came off as a whiny, "oh woe is me' little girl. She was built up to be this hardened, badass, but there was like three times she actually had the courage to do anything but just watch. I think she was supposed to be 24 or something and be the provider for her brother, but she sure didn't act like it.
I can tell that the author as read other books in this genre and tried to hop on the band wagon. I love me a good trope, but this book was riddled with it (and not in a good way). The writing is choppy, and I found myself having to pause and reread because I wasn't sure what the sentence was trying to say. I also think that this book could have been a 100-200 pages less, and the story wouldn't have been affected.
I read it, but honestly I kind of wish I had just DNF'd. I don't think I'll be reading the next book, nor do I think I will reread it.
