Excellent sequel to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, with a compelling story and the cold war, red-brick Circus and its denizens pretty much intact. Some stylistic deviations, but not enough to put me off.

I hope he writes another.

Getting another Smiley book is such a treat. This feels like most of a Le Carre novel with just a few Harkaway flourishes, and given that I love both authors, it is all welcome (for example, the more extended Anne riffs feels a bit more of Harkaway vs Carre, who mostly seemed interested in her as an off-screen gravitation pull on Smiley). This book starts out as a relatively sedate, detailed espionage novel: getting into the nuts-and-bolts of moving chess-pieces around on a shrouded board. And then it sudden blows the lid off the joint, ratcheting the suspense and action up to 11. And since it is a prequel novel, you know deep down that nothing can happen to Smiley and it doesn't matter because it is so gripping. I now want to find time to go back and reread the rest of the Le Carre Smiley cannon.
