Like father, like son. This novel is pitch-perfect.

Narrative-wise, the book is very similar to Smiley's People--a thread involving Eastern European refugees unravels that brings in the Circus, and it all comes back to Karla's family and past.  It is a pleasant read, but it certainly does not break new ground.

This isn't really a stand-alone. I was not the target audience and I found it hard to get into. I have not read the other book but I still found this boring.

If anyone is qualified to write an authentic yet “new” Smiley novel, it’s Nick Harkaway.
As a casual Smiley reader, I enjoyed this. Lots of familiar characters feature either in person or mentioned in passing. The pacing and dialogue are spot on and the storyline is perfect. Well worth a read for any fans of espionage.
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own unbiased opinion.
