I have no idea what the author was thinking. He had unprecedented access to Reagan and everyone in his life as his authorized biographer. Instead of an in-depth look at Reagan, the reader gets a memoir of a fictional character Morris has created, who follows Reagan throughout his career. The reader never knows what is real and what is made up. I hesitate to even call this a biography, more like a work of fiction. It is clear that Morris did not like his subject or did not understand him, which is why he chose this half-assed way to write a "biography". I expected more from a Pulitzer-prize winning author.

I am not a huge Reagan fan, in fact this book made me like him less. That said, the style and the writing is perfect. The literary use of the fictional acquaintance who crosses paths with Reagan or follows him from afar as he moves through life and makes his professional and to some degree personal evolution is so engaging. Interestingly there is very little personal affect for Reagan's kids, I think in part because he really had little to no interest in them or for them. The book feels very objective and very closely current to his life. I would read it again and still enjoy it.

After reading Morris' excellent biography of Theodore Roosevelt [b:Theodore Rex|40923|Theodore Rex|Edmund Morris|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388177930l/40923._SY75_.jpg|210239], I was so excited to read this biography of one of my favorite people. What a let down! This was a piece of garbage. This guy, Morris had as much access to Reagan as a writer could get, and could have written something great, but instead he wrote a bunch of garbage not even worth the paper it's printed on. If I could rate this zero stars, I would. I couldn't finish this garbage. What a waste!

I greatly admire Edmund Morris and have really liked every book that I have read by him--this one not so much.
