This book was just phenomenal. I thought the pacing was great and the writing was easy to understand and keep up with. I loved the characters and empathized with Star. I felt like every character was alive and their personalities jumped off the pages and made them real which a lot of books strive to do.
This book made me tear up so many times and it was so hard to keep those tears back while I was at work. I really wish this wasn’t still our current reality but I liked that the book didn’t sugarcoat it and make it seem like everything was going to be fine soon. Instead it left us with a message that everyone needs to continue to work together to change the system and we shouldn’t stop doing the right thing no matter what. We should always be trying to make things better than they were before.

So good I had to give 5.75. Very relatable book. I can relate to Starr the most. A MUST READ NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS!!!(New favourite book :P) Extremely informative and emotional though. Some hard parts.

Wow. This book should be required reading in every high school. Yes, there is quite a bit of profanity, but honestly, its nothing the kids in high school aren't saying themselves. The author did a great job of explaining how the main character code switches depending on which group of friends she's with: either the rich white suburban kids, or her childhood friends back in her gang-run neighborhood. The story centers around an extremely timely topic: police involved shootings of black males, particularly teens. I actually think the author does a good job of having the main character sympathetic to some police officers, such as her uncle, who uphold the badge in a good way, while balancing her anger towards those who abuse their power.

Wow. Just wow. The reason this book has been deemed “banned” is because it tells the truth. It shows in such an amazing way the institutional racism within a police force and they don’t want to you see that so that you’ll keep supporting them. The only reason this isn’t a 5 star read is because I don’t know if I would reread it. Maybe once or twice, but constant rereads are held for my 5 stars. The reason being is this book is heavy but in such an important way. The fact that this came out years before George Floyd and it shows exactly what happened helps show more of the fact of how true this is/can be. It’s a step up for accountability in the police force and shows such a strong familial bond that is SO important to this story and characters. I highly recommend the audiobook as the narrator, Bahni Turpin is phenomenal and gave such power to Starr’s voice. I laughed, gasped, got angry, and cried all throughout this book. Angie Thomas is a phenomenal writer and I can’t wait to read more of her books. Read more banned books to support minority voices.

Brilliant writing. Tragedy and a search for justice drive the storyline, which artfully details the nuances of institutional racism, adolescence, generational trauma, broken systems, the toll of code-switching, inter-personal racism, healthy and unhealthy family relationships, addiction, abuse, gangs, and more. The stories of the various, sometimes unexpected, ways people are trying to make things better for the people around them support and deepen the overall story of one teenage girl's journey through heart-breaking loss and incredibly difficult decisions. Heart-wrenching, thought-provoking, eye-opening, humbling, inspiring, and ultimately hopeful.
