As a fan, the depth of Ichigo and his family's characters really are artfully crafted. The revelations of the Grand King Fisher with Misaki alongside Isshin's feelings made me love the characters a little more.

I'm really stricken by the imagery of the rain throughout this series thus far as both Ichigo and Orihime seem not to have been cleansed by rain but have their universes torn apart in the rain.

After this volume, I'm left considering the questions: What is honor? What constitutes a center of a universe? And what actually counts as a resolution? I'm interested in Tite Kubo's answers throughout the series.

Of the Bleach volumes I read, this is the only one I enjoyed. Kubo has a serious problem with repetition, to the point where even by the fifth volume it became clear that a lot of basic story beats were going to be utilized multiple times for different characters, and would even be worded similarly between them. I can appreciate his art during the battle sequences and the overall aesthetic is fun, but outside of them it lacks the subtlety or charm needed to make the slice-of-life sections pop (though it doesn't help that the humor also isn't much fun). I can see why Kubo became infamous for introducing new characters en masse: It's not that hard to come up with so many of them when they react the same way to the important parts of the story.

This volume won me over by virtue of having a bit more pathos and tension than the others, and it works reasonably well as its own little arc. I'm not usually a big fan of fight scenes on their own, but the way this one played out was consistently interesting, and it was well-contextualized. I'm happy I read this, at least, and I've heard good things about the Soul Society arc, but unfortunately there are four volumes to go between where I left off and the start of that arc, and then everything afterwards is somewhat contentious, and I think I'll just tap out while I'm still ahead.
