this was a very different and interesting story filled with a wide array of unique characters. It was a little slow at times and I didn’t love the ending but transported me to a new world. And now I want a donut!

So wonderful. A lot of hard moments that were handled gracefully. Ultimately so much hope and joy. The involvement of the family from space made this quite unique.

I wish I could give this book 10 stars! It was that good! The escape of music to get away from your problems. It’s so relatable. Some of the most beautiful scenes occur when the characters are experiencing the music and the music is so beautiful that it takes the form of different memories. The author allowed for the humanization of a character like Shazuki who has looked like she was 30 for 40 years. Originally you think “she’s going to finish the cycle and get the ability to play back again.” Meanwhile being in a relationship with an alien made her realize that she’s redeemable!!! It was such a great twist. And for Shazuki to not even question Katrina’s womanhood, shows that hate is taught. It’s beyond words how wonderful it was for Shazuki to say “oh I don’t care” when Katrina discloses that she’s trans for the first time. It’s so beautiful!!!

It's hard to follow, weird page breaks and formatting indicating POV changes. Some significant points were written in a very insignificant way. There's a huge amount of text about violens and food, but the story line was lacking. There's a lot of missed opportunities to expand on the story and I just got tired of trying to make it work. I didn't feel like taking the time to finish it when I have others on my tbr shelf to enjoy.

I wasn't ready for this book, but I can see some people loving it. Parts were very good, cute and fun and insightful and interesting, but so much of the book was sadness and violence and transphobia which I found hard to bear. Read the trigger warnings!!
