I picked up Light From Uncommon Stars only because of the title and cover (good job, marketers/design team!) and read it blind. So delighted to find an unusual, page turning story!

Katrina is a trans teenager who runs away from an abusive father with just a few possessions, including her violin. She crosses paths with Shizuka Satomi, a violin teacher who (unbeknownst to her) has made a deal with the devil to deliver seven souls in order to save her own. Ms. Satomi has delivered six brilliant violin students already — and Katrina is in the crosshairs to be the seventh. But then — add queer alien-human romance! Alien technology crossed with donuts! Cursed violins! And a poignant picture of a trans girl trying to find herself and her voice, while holding all of the ugly voices from her past in her head.

This was a bizarre read but so unique. I think it’ll stick with me for a long time

Equal parts harrowing and delightful, a strange, moving and entertaining read with massive themes explored through a very strange plot. It was an unexpected mash up of a lot of genres I like, and it took me a little while to get into it but I am glad I stuck with it, by 100 pages I was invested in the absurdity which would life you up and then smash you down to harsh reality, and kept being surprised at where it went next.

Makes the short list of my annual reading recommendations. A book about found family, self-love, and rising in the face of explicit in-your-face adversity. The story centers around several women finding their way in the world: a refugee that brought her family a long way from home escaping war, a music teacher that has to account for past sins and a bad deal she made when she was young, a woman that ran away from home after facing transphobia and violence from her parents, the heiress of a centuries-long artisanal tradition that has always centered on the men, a person who is torn between her duties to her mother and her own identity. An incredible story that surprises you with its narrative elements.

There are some themes that weren't explored as in depth as I would've liked
