This was a beautiful book that melded so many genres in a way that I found very successful. All the characters are incredibly compelling and represent the many different ways womanhood happens and exists. Trans characters are more important than ever, especially by Trans authors. I was never entirely sure where the plot was going to go, which can often make a book frustrating, but instead, Aoki made me constantly drawn back in. It's a hard book to summarize, but things like found/chosen family, the importance of art to humanity, and queer joy made this book so powerful, I imagine I will be thinking about it for quite a while!

Light from Uncommon Stars is a special book worth reading. Katrina — our transgender protagonist — is particularly well-written. Her life has significant hardship due to transphobia, but! She is also loyal and talented. She is ultimately uplifted and deeply cared for. There are harrowing moments, but there is also joy. And tangerine juice. And aliens who fled war to make donuts. And a woman who sold her soul for the love of violin. I rolled with this wacky world, grounded by a trans girl I wanted the best for.

The pacing did start to drag
because it became clear quite quickly that Shizuka was not going to sacrifice Katrina’s soul.
Despite revolving around eternal damnation, the plot ultimately lacked stakes
since I correctly assumed Katrina’s soul was safe and Lan would save Shizuka (like she saved everyone else she loves).
Regardless, I enjoyed this book very much. And think The Daniels should adapt it for the big (or little) screen.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO SO SO MUCH. Slightly random but if I didn’t already play the violin this book would have convinced me to start. I don’t have any coherent thoughts right now but I really enjoyed reading this and highly recommend it.

‘Good Omens meets The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet’ is at the beginning of the description for this book so of course I need to finally read ‘Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet’ now. It is in a pile of books currently on the desk next to me and has been there for months 😂
