A beautifully queer mashup of urban fantasy and science fiction with a coming of age journey. It manages to avoid the common wish fulfilment tropes in much trans fiction and treats its characters with respect. It has a fantastic sense of place like the community it’s set in is one of the characters.

I absolutely loved it.

Such a beautiful story of learning how to live again, even after what feels like losing everything. Aoki’s writing is so heartfelt and gorgeous, especially when talking about music. The characters are all so complex and messy and loveable in their own ways, and I adored the found family aspect! I’ll probably come back and write a better review once I can form coherent thought. This book is very good!!

Absolutely amazing. I cried several times. The way that this book uses music is fantastic. Please read it.

Strange and bright and heartbreaking and delightful. It really did make me laugh and cry. Very difficult in parts, see warnings for sure.

The premise of this book is terrific. Three lives intersect: a trans girl running away from home, a violin teacher who made a deal with the devil, and a space alien who owns a donut shop. There are some very lovely moments, but the writing is not very good. It's repetitive, there are far too many fragments, and half the book seems to be written as questions. A bit pizzicato for me. This book is also pretty cruel to the trans character, particularly how she thinks about herself, and the book spends too much time giving space to transphobes.

Fr should have read the content warnings for this because some of this stuff kinda bothered me, and normally reading things doesn't affect me that much. I guess it's kind of on me because obviously I have access to content warnings. Oh well. Anyways.

Complaints first, because I'm an asshole. I'm not sure I liked the different shifting POVs. I like to think I'm not an idiot, so at first I'd be a little lost on who was talking. And there were so many. Some of them just side characters. Wack.

I did really like the book though. I don't normally go for sci-fi, and I actually read this or the LGBTQIA+ book club I'm in. At first I wasn't a huge fan of it but I'm glad I stayed with it. Definitely thought provoking and an interesting story. Shirley was my favorite character. All my homies love Shirley.
