I read this in high school and then again in 2008. It is still an excellent look into the Jewish community and a tale of devote friendship.

I read this in my eighth grade english class a couple years ago, and every once in a while I still think about this book and how much I enjoyed it. I have never enjoyed a school-assigned book as much as this one (but Frankenstein is a close second). The characters, the storyline, everything was just so captivating. I really really enjoyed seeing the differences and similarities between Reuven and Danny's families and their interactions. I normally am not the biggest fan of school assigned books, but this one caught me and never let go. Totally gonna purchase this book again so I can reread it.

I learned so much about the Hasidim, Talmud, Zionism and World War II - yet the story between two boys' friendship is so engaging that all this other knowledge just gets slipped in. Except for a few arcane discussions around the Talmud, this book completely absorbed me.

This was a beautiful coming of age story- insightful and poignant. The backdrop of struggles among American Jewish communities during and following WWII was fascinating, as well.
