First Bloom Into You, then How Do We Relationship? and now Girl Friends… Why does every Yuri Mangaka insist on including this sort of super uncomfortable non-consensual element to their stories?! And this occurs in all three of these series and for WHAT?! I just wanted a wholesome love story and instead, I get the non-consensual kissing and weird diet culture glorification. No to all of this, I can’t believe so many people actually liked this!

These rating and review are for all the completed volumes.

Mari was your typically nerd, clever and shy girl. She only got few friends and usually ate her lunch alone until one time, Akko, the class' popular girl, decided to talk to her. She said she's been wanting to befriend someone as cute as Akko and then did her a makeover. Mari, after several attempt of "makeovering", could trust Akko and could blend more easily in her class. But then, on their second year of highschool, Mari's feeling toward Akko has gradually changed into something more...

My first time reading actual yuri manga (usually just read fanfictions) and I think I picked the right one. This one is so cute and the relationship development, albeit slow, but seems very realistic and natural. I enjoy the way Akko handled her feelings toward Mari, too, and how she became more daring and preverted than Mari afterward. lol.

Though I think this story took place in somewhat idealistic setting, so it could enhance their romance plot. No homophobic friends, and no real threat to their relationship, but it could also because they're not coming out even until the last chapter. It's just about two friends being lovers and their way handling their feelings and newfound relationship. It's cute!

I Remember Those Sticker Photos!

I read this years ago and loved it and this reread has changed nothing! This is very much the beginning/pre-relationship part of the story. I normally don’t like the origin section of a story with no relationship development but the characters are so endearing that I was more than willing to watch the evolution of their friendship knowing where it’s headed. At the end, even though I knew what was going to happen, I put it down and thought ‘well now I have to buy the next volume!’ Can’t wait to continue with this!

Seeing as how many people will check the reviews of the first volume to check whether they want to read a series or not, I'll post my full review here:

Girl Friends was one of the very first yuri manga I ever read (after a year or so of reading VERY questionable yaoi manga) and to this day I can proudly say that it is my very favorite manga series. I love the characters a whole lot and adore the progression of Mari and Akko's relationship over the course of the five books. Book 3 is, in my eyes, the weakest book of the three, but it provides a central point of conflict that was probably necessary so that the two lovebirds can finally be honest to each other. The ending is a very very happy and optimistic one! There are a lot of cliché scenes of "but I'm a girl!/but we're both girls!/wait, women can date each other??/but friends do XYZ all the time and it doesn't matter!", but this seems to be a prerequisite of most yuri manga. Not to be overlooked: the cast of side characters is adorable and hilarious, with most every girl being their very own person and a great source of comic relief when necessary, which isn't always a given.
