Probablemente un 3.5.
A ratos se me ha hecho demasiado confuso, con algunos saltos extraños (además del pov de los personajes, que ya es extraño de por sí, pero se entiende que sea así), y para lo cortito que es ha tenido partes bastante repetitivas.
Aún así a partir de la segunda mitad creo que mejora bastante y llegas al punto en el que cuesta soltarlo.
De momento me gustó bastante más La casa al final de Needless street, pero seguiré con Catriona seguro ✨️

Part gothic, part cult thriller, this story had a little bit of everything. I did struggle in parts to keep timelines/perspectives straight, but otherwise it was a solidly pleasant read.
Atmospheric, spooky and well-written. A great October read.
En Altnaharra, una isla escocesa, aparecen los cuerpos asesinados de los miembros de un culto gobernado por "El tío". Dinah, la única superviviente, declara que ha sido la pequeña Eve, que se ahogó al intentar escapar.
A partir de esta escena inicial, acompañaremos a Dinah hacia una retrospección, donde conoceremos cómo eran las vidas de aquellos niños que vivían en Altnaharra bajo la tutela de "El Tío", centrándonos especialmente en Eve.
Poco a poco, nos vamos adentrando en un ambiente más oscuro, donde somos conscientes de lo que viven los habitantes de la isla y cómo llegan a la situación que se nos presenta al inicio del libro.
Es una historia que he disfrutado muchísimo. No diría que es de terror, pero sí que tiene un ambiente oscuro y muy turbio, que te mantiene pegada a sus páginas para descubrir qué pasa realmente con Eve y con el lugar en el que vive.
Debo decir que este libro emplea un recurso que me suele gustar mucho, y este caso no es la excepción; ya conocemos el final de la historia desde la primera página y, a partir de ahí, vamos descubriendo cómo se llegó a él. Es algo que siempre logra intrigarme y esta autora lo emplea muy bien.
El final me sorprendió mucho y muy gratamente, me parece que la autora cierra la historia de una forma muy correcta y que te deja un sabor agridulce.
En general, una historia con un ambiente oscuro y turbio, con muchos secretos por desvelar y una trama que te mantiene pegada a sus páginas.

Little Eve by Catriona Ward

I must start this review off with the caveat that I have read two other Catriona Ward books that I have LOVED. I fully went into this book with the highest hopes and perhaps that's why my expectations fell short.
If you're looking for a culty, wild and amazing gothic horror by Catriona Ward, I implore you to read Sundial.
Little Eve is chock full of the makings of a superb book, at least in my opinion.
Dual/Split timelines? Check.
Unreliable narration? Check.
Creepy, atmospheric and immersive setting? Check.
Wild, unpredictable storyline? Check.
That being said, I just felt... bored? This book was a tough one for me to get through. I borrowed this from the library and I've been wanting to get all of my library books caught up and finished for accountability, but also to stay in time with my dues and not get them back too late. It's been amazing so far, and I've found that the library has actually heavily increased the quantity and quality of my reading experience. Despite feeling a fire underneath me to finish this book, I didn't enjoy it.
I don't think I'd say I wholeheartedly disliked it as it certainly had moments and the beginnings of what could have been something super enjoyable for me, but I just don't think this was up my alley. I say all of this with peace and love and the utmost respect for Catriona Ward, whom I am a HUGE fan of.
Maybe I'd amend this rating to a 2.5 or a 3 purely on the basis that I do like the author and I can see why other people would like this book, but my heart is giving me a 2 right now. That is not to discourage ANYONE from reading this and I'd actually be curious to see if I'm the minority here!
I'd look out for a lot of elements, but some of the most obvious and jarring ones are:
Cults
Blood sacrifice
Child abuse
Starvation
Graphic depictions of death
Murder

Y este año lo ha vuelto a hacer con el libro que el sello Runas acaba de publicar: La pequeña Eve. Obra con la que la autora ganó el Premio Shirley Jackson y el Premio August Derleth a la mejor novela de horror de los British Fantasy Awards 2019 y que nos llega en español con la excelente traducción de Cristina Macía.
