I guess I like early Catriona Ward. Like many people, I absolutely loved The Last House on Needless Street. Admittedly, it’s a very polarizing novel—you either love it or hate it—and I completely understand why its concept might frustrate some readers. Personally, I despised how similar ideas were taken to extremes in Looking Glass Sound, which left me wary of ever touching Catriona Ward's work again.
The Last House on Needless Street hit the perfect balance of everything I enjoy in a novel, which is why her later books felt especially frustrating. I really didn’t care for Sundial, and I outright hated Looking Glass Sound. After that, I resolved never to read her work again.
However, thanks to Nightmaremaven's book club pick, I decided to give this one a try. Knowing it was one of her earlier works, rather than a more recent release, made me more willing to dive in—and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. It’s very different from what she’s written since, but you can see hints of the writer she would later become. Period pieces are almost always a win for me, and this one was no exception. I loved the setting—the witchy, culty vibe and the exploration ofthemes of abuse and generational trauma .
While it’s not on the level of The Last House on Needless Street, I liked it.

I received a copy of this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cults, unreliable narrators, mysteries, and bleak seaside locations.....these are a few a of my favourite things! I can't say I was hooked from the beginning because I was a bit confused by the perspective shifts in the first chapters, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down.

It’s one of those unreliable narrator books I love. And not in the they’re-a-drunk sense or a they’re-lying sense… in the this-is-how-the-narrator-sees-the-world sense. What would that be called? Where, like, the narrator is simply conveying their understanding of the world, but you know that if you looked at it from the outside you’d see it entirely differently? And you gotta piece together what’s REALLY happening? Anyway, that’s a thing I enjoy, whatever you call it, and it’s what this chick writes. ‘Twas good. I’m rounding up.
Me rendí alrededor de la página ochenta. Es una lástima, me había gustado lo anterior que había leído de Ward.
