Almost started reading it again once I finished it. So well written.

Ended up tearing through this in three days. This apparently won the Shirley Jackson award for best novel back in 2018, and I can see why. You’ve got a hell of a setup in the first chapter - a family found dead in a Scottish castle on a remote island - and the rest of the book unwinds how everything came to this point. Tightly plotted and wound, full of gothic vibes, and an excellent read for spooky season. Pick it up!

This book was an extremely pleasant surprise. I went in with very few expectations, and what I found was a riveting story that I simply couldn’t put down. The writing was beautiful, and the twists and turns constantly kept me on my toes. I will definitely be checking out Catriona Ward’s other work!

“What has happened here? A terrible thing.”

Catriona Ward nails the murky, atmospheric vibe in this Gothic thriller. Like “The Last House on Needless Street,” the first and only other Ward I’ve picked up (so far), Ward writes with a confident expertise in subject and content matter, no matter the story. I truly felt swept up and away into this historical fiction nightmare. Like maybe I, too, will someday be convinced to join a snake cult that survives purely off honey and bread. I wouldn’t put it past me. Lots of loss here, paramount across the plot. Grief, speculations surrounding evil and truth are to account for that. Great story, very dark, great delivery.

Jumps in time and narrator are all labeled/titled and extremely helpful to ward off confusion, yet, there are plot holes that Ward just narrowly misses filling entirely. Nearly forgot about them, but it’s irking nonetheless.

4/5 Very rarely do I enjoy horror novel endings, but I felt thoroughly satisfied with the closing of “Little Eve.”

While perhaps not as "twisty" as some of Catriona Ward's other titles, (The Last House on Needless Street and Sundial), I found Little Eve to be a compelling character driven dark gothic tale.

Set on a Scottish isle, cultish elements, unreliable narrators, mystery, and dark secrets abound.

Moody and atmospheric - I enjoyed this one!

Have you ever read a novel and wondered about the mental health of the writer who could come up with something like this? This book is all kinds of creepy, but major points for originality.

Set on an isolated island off Scotland starting in 1917 (but it bounces between a few characters points of view in different years), the man Dinah, Eve, and their other siblings and the man they call “Uncle,” the Adder is coming to bring a chosen one powers, and they will do anything to earn the distinction. The book calls this a clan, but it read like reading about a cult from the point of view of cult members who are absolute believers. I’ve read books on cults before, but that’s always from the point of view of a member who escaped a cult. This setting is important in this book, and it unfolds in a way that is fascinating.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this novel, which RELEASES OCTOBER 11, 2022.

What a ride.
Its definitely my favorite I've read from Catriona Ward (and I've read them all now).
It's just too good the way you learn about it all, such a nice puzzle book.
Also way more hmm, like for example with sundial you end the book and certain things are still confusing and like wtff?? here everything is explained and its just so goooooood.

Loved it.

I have now read two Catriona Ward books and they were both so amazingly well-constructed that I thought about them for days afterwards.
