Little Eve

Catriona Ward

3.8 AVERAGE

This book was a pretty gripping exploration of how trauma and abuse, especially in childhood and perpetrated by those who are supposed to care for us, deeply alters the psyche and sense of self. It is moody, and atmospheric, and heavily influenced by its setting, which I thought worked well for the overall story.

My only trouble with this book is that there are a lot of characters, lore plot points, and details to keep track of as the story is unraveling. This is obviously important for a fleshed out novel, but I found it a little difficult to keep track of what was going on at some points in the book. It all came together in the end, even if I had to re-read a couple of pages here and there.

Overall, if you’re a Catriona Ward fan, you will likely enjoy this book - though it might not pack the same punch as some of her other books for you. This one is very atmospheric and runs at a relatively slow place, but is a compelling read nonetheless.

What to say about Little Eve, is it a picture of a cult set in a rural Irish village and crumbling castle? Yes. Is it a historical murder mystery? Very much so. Horror? With a body count in the teens, also a big yes. All blended together, while not entirely seamlessly, very well done..

Catriona Ward just knows how to check all of my boxes and ones I didn’t even know I had! One of the best cult horror stories I’ve read in a long time and I tend to read a lot of them because it’s one of my favourite sub genres. This one is definitely amongst the top ones if not THE top and I can’t recommend it highly enough. The twists and the turns legit had my jaw dropping and it’s rare a horror novel gives me actual physical reactions but this one gave me plenty!
