Confusing. Not well laid out. Had potential but no follow through.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF

I’m sorry Jake Tapper. I really like you, but I could not finish this book.
It felt like it was too full of dates, facts, people and meaningless Washington conversation...
there were too many facts and figures, references to people I didn’t know, to historical things I did not get and more.
It was boring.

I am not one much for political history trivia, and this book
has a good amount of it. The actual fictional plot is pretty
good (average), but does not really begin until 100 pages
into all the laughable gyrations on Capitol Hill have occurred.
But when it does I thought how all the little bits fit together were
clever at times.
However, I just find it somewhat farfetched that the machinations
in Congress were/are this bad when you include the fictional
narrative's violence.
Character development is fairly shallow, except of course
for the 'hero'. At the end you can just imagine a video
of the US Flag waving in the breeze to the tune of
America the Beautiful.

3.5 Stars. A surprisingly suspenseful political thriller. I particularly liked the history and the insiders view of Washington DC.

Historical fiction set in 1950s DC, so the setting is long on history, historical figures, and historical vignettes. The plot is slow to develop.

Short impression: A thoroughly enjoyable thriller with immersive worldbuilding that suffers from some minor pacing issues.

Longer impression: A very fun read! The characters are as vivid as the setting, wtih just the right amount if detail to make them spring to life, and the political intrigue is fascinating (and while reading, you can't help but think that things haven't changed much in the last 60 years). My only real problem was that the tension rose a little too slowly, only to escalate very abruptly in the midst of a host of dramatic twists that left me with little rimw to appreciate any single one of them. This finale-avalanche was then followed by a slightly too-long explanation of what had just happened.
That said, these are minor issues in an otherwise competently written book.
