Lost my interest around 30% in. Started very engaging and then just kinda went down from there.. Wouldn't suggest
DNF, there will not give a rating. I love Jake Tapper as a reporter. As a writer, not so much.

Started off really enjoying this. Felt pulled right in, and then there was a real slow drag on the pace. I couldn't get into that portion. Seemed too bureaucratic and not very interested. Overall the book is decent. A fun historical fiction, or fiction with historic characters within it. I am not sure. The best part is the attention to detail about the time period.
I say this book was about 3.25 stars. It was okay. I don’t feel like I wasted my time. It was an okay historical fiction with some action. It focuses on Washington politics and secrets. These are topics that are super interesting to me, but the story never grabbed me and pulled me in. I am reading the second book in the series and have hopes for it to be better. Overall I would say read this book if it’s available and you are looking for something to read. I wouldn’t go search it out.
A thriller? Not so much so. Just for fun, take an alcoholic drink every time there is a passage that alludes to Donald Trump. You’ll be buzzed very quickly. Better yet, take a drink every time Charlie does. You’ll be s***faced before the end of the book. You’ll be glad you are because the ending is laughingly ridiculous.
I’m on the fence with this one. On one hand, the story’s hokie enough to dismiss the whole thing. On the other hand, the premise got me thinking about the possibility of the Hellfire Clubs and the like being involved in assassinations and political dynasties. I guess the ending tied it together enough to set aside some of the crazy plot twists. So I’m not sorry I read it.
Or I should say, listened to it. And it’s on that front that I offer a suggestion to the author. Get someone else to do the audio narrative for your next book.

Not a bad book and well written, but I felt Mr. Tapper was trying to include every bit of political history of the 50's in this one volume. It was an interesting story though and he left it open at the end for a sequel...I'll try him again if another book comes out.
