Hmmm. A sweet little novella that's like grabbing a cupcake when you're super hungry - sweet going down, but ultimately not very satisfying for long.

When I requested this on Netgalley I missed that this was set in series that the author has already written books in, but to be honest it's not really essential to the plot. There are some references to stuff that's happened before, though, so some readers may want to check those out before reading.

Beatrice has had her life rocked by scandal, and now she's afraid to show her face, worried about the speculation from those in the upper class and about bringing shame on her family. Her parents don't help much, feeling that she's brought embarrassment on her. When her friend Jessica invites her to a masquerade, though, she can't resist the temptation.

Drew loved Beatrice years ago, but his eagerness to get it right and propose to her at the right time meant that someone else beat him to it... When he spots Beatrice at the masquerade his attention his caught once again, and this time nothing stands in his way.

This little story reminds me a bit of Cinderella, except with more sexual tension and no carriage to turn into a pumpkin at midnight. At least these two actually knew each other before, though, unlike Cinderella when she falls for the prince!

Things move pretty quickly even considering that it's a novella, though, and I was side eyeing some of the stuff that went on simply because of the time period this is set in. Sometimes I'm curious as to whether or not so many of the upper class were actually as randy as the romance novels depict them to be!

A quick, lighthearted read overall, nice for when you don't really want to think and just want something sweet and sexy.

Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of this book through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

"3 out of 5 stars! This was a cute Cinderella-esque historical romance!"
