I really liked the premise of this book, but that premise is only present for the first few chapters, then it peters out. After that, the book tries to be profound and philosophical and thought provoking - and just ends up being ridiculous. The characters are at best plot devices with no personality. At worst, they are tragic concepts whose entire personality is "sick/dying person". Everyone is always looking for someone, because, of course, you cannot be a whole, fulfilled human on your own. One of the characters had actually found their person but, quelle horreur, she was no longer conventionally attractive so he...kept looking?? The only thing keeping my interest - albeit just barely - was Jean Perdus search for Sanary, the mysterious author of a book that menat a lot to him.
He finds her. And she says, quote "And this book was supposed to bring me my man, Jeanno!" Of course! Of f*cking course! Why else would she pour her heart and soul into writing, if not to escape the terrible, teeeerrible fate of being single?!
Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. That was the moment I closed the book, never to open it again. I'll rather end the year with my fourth DNF in a row, than with this book...
