I loved Britt Bennett's writing, the story and everything about this book. It was a hard hitting book and I loved the exploration of being black in America (particularly in the 50s) and being white passing. I will read anything else Britt Bennett writes because I just found the story hit in all the right places. All of the characters felt so human, even the side characters. It's such a beautiful book and I think it was well deserved in winning it's goodreads choice awards category.

Beautifully written. Enjoyed this reading so much. People judging by your skin color even from your own race.

I could not put this book down. The writing, the characters, and the multi-decade historical setting all pulled me in immediately and kept me intrigued until the end.

I liked it a lot, the plot was good and had a lot of interesting aspects to it. It was interesting the way the two sisters could live completely different lives through their race. I liked how the daughters also had povs, but I think I would’ve liked the ending to have more of a reunion between both sisters and both daughters. I didn’t like how Stella completely ditched her sister at the end only for her to be honest with her daughter anyways. It also could’ve been interesting to see an interaction with Desiree and Kennedy.

I will definitely be thinking about this book for awhile. It was beautifully written and the numerous perspectives added so much to the story. It was a bit confusing at parts just because it goes forward in time and then back again depending on the chapter, but overall I think this was a strength of the book. It did a great job at exploring complex topics and I feel like a better person for having read it.
