This book was deep, layered, well-written, and contained some really beautiful insights about life and humanity and society. That being said, this book took me quite a while to finish and it felt, at times, like I was chewing a piece of meat for an inordinate number of chews. In the end, I’m not sure I totally felt the overall point deserved so much book. But I can appreciate the overall point the author was making and can still feel glad I plowed through this book.

This is the longest it has taken me to finish a book in a while...
This book was simultaneously too long and not long enough. It was as if someone had sloppily edited together a traditional novel and a history text, each of which I might have enjoyed on their own, but which could never seem to fit together well for me as a reader.
Meanwhile the prose was functional, but never beautiful, never anything worth remembering. I don't know if that was the translation or if it is also a problem of the original, I suspect the translation. If I read anything else by Gabriel Vásquez, it will likely be in the original spanish...and maybe something shorter.

This is the sweeping epic he has been writing towards for years. The closing pages are astonishing!
