A classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is what it is expected to be: a modern fairytale, hopefully not – ever – to be forgotten.
2010: It's been years since I read this book. No, let me go further back. When I was little (say four) I watched this movie every single day. I love The Wizard of Oz. So I was kind of afraid that after I bought the entire set of books this month and started to reread that I would be disappointed.
I wasn't. I love this book as much as ever. Possibly more, because now I can admire the simple, straightforward, unaffected writing and the beautiful imagination of L. Frank Baum. No nonsense about it all being a dream, no explanations or rationalizations about the fantastic things that happen—it's magic.
I'm really looking forward to re-reading the rest of the series.
2015: Read it to my kids (ages 5 and 8). The eight-year-old kept pretending he wasn't listening, but he was. They both loved it. This made a great read-aloud.

Finally read this classic! I was a bit spoiled of the twist in this (which is my fault) but the way he describes the land of Oz and the characters add so much warmth and fun. With this book only being 150 pages, I highly recommend this read.

A classic you cannot fault. I read this story numerous times as a kid and for years I’ve wanted to read the entire Oz catalogue, so this was the place to start.
People who’ve never read The Wizard of Oz before might be surprised to learn that the movie is actually only a percentage of the book itself. Once Dorothy has met her three friends, they actually experience more monsters and troubles before even meeting the wicked witch!
I love how dialogue from the book ends up making its way into the movie in multiple places. It feels familiar, comforting and true to the story.
The book is much more brutal than the movie, with beheadings and even more death throughout!
Overall though; it’s a story of friendship, dedication, love and home. A staple in the classic children’s books which has swept its way into millions of children’s hearts.
