The introduction to the book is VERY important, especially for those who have seen the film. Having seen the 1939 film, and having enjoyed all but the moral lesson at the end, I can now say I enjoyed the book much more. I am glad to have read that Baum never intended there to be a moral lesson, and that he valued the works of Grim. The film, being a sanitized version of the story, leaves out much of the fun, while trying to be "appropriate". This book, however, left me wanting to know more about the land of Oz, which the film never really did. Luckily, there are more books to be read!
