There are some Christian themes in this book, though also an odd comment that seems to put Buddha on the same level with Jesus, and a character called a medium who can see the future. Generally, content is limited to some more or less veiled comments about infidelity, a bit of bullying and fighting, and the usual danger and tension you'd expect from an adventure story. This would make a great family read aloud, though for reading on their own, I wouldn't recommend it for the very youngest readers.

The only thing I dislike about the story is the misogyny in the way that Meg's twin brothers reprimand her for fighting another student at their school and how they try to boss their mother around about where she can cook, etc. as the men of the house while their father is away. Both are such strong yet emotionally self aware characters, and they deserve better.
