This is my comfort series, and I always enjoy picking them up. This instalment in particular doesn't have my favorite mystery. I think there's just too much going on and it strains credulity. However, I really enjoyed the interpersonal bits, and I think this is one of the funnier books in the series, so it kind of balances out.

Dallas's best friend, Mavis Freestone, is about to give birth any moment & Dallas would rather deal with any number of dead bodies than organise the baby shower. So when two work colleagues & lovers are found dead, both beaten & strangled, in their respective apartments, Dallas is on the case. Everyone who knew the couple say they were well liked & very happy together, & they all seemingly have an alibi for the night in question. To add to the pressure, one of Mavis's fellow pregnant women disappears, Mavis is certain that she wouldn't have just gone away this close to giving birth & she wants Dallas to find out what happened to Tandy.

In amongst the cases, there are some funny moments between Dallas & Mavis, Dallas & Peabody, Dallas & Roarke, & even Mavis & Leonardo. Both Dallas & Roarke can handle their own difficult careers, but they can't deal with a pregnant Mavis & Peabody has to step in to help. I get where Dallas is coming from as attending a baby shower sounds to me like a particularly tortuous circle of Dante's Hell. I just wish she could be a tad nicer to Summerset, sometimes it's just over the top snarl. Apart from that, it's pretty much a perfect read.
