i read this because of taylor swift and was not disappointed. all i can say really is this is is very evermore coded.

i do not support any character in the book tbh, but the complexity of the story and characters really captured me. i enjoyed annotating this because there were a lot of things up for different interpretations which are the type of books i love- those that kept me guessing and thinking. there are themes/parts which i didn't really like, but considering the time period this was written, i could see why they were added.

Not sure where to rate this. In the first half I disliked every character in it, but it was a good book overall.

3/5 ⭐️ I don't regret reading this book, but I was also not captivated by it. The twists were great and kept me on my toes! I was interested by our FMC becoming obssessed with her predecessor and what life she must have lived, but in the end I found her annoying. It felt a bit drawn out and not much happens until the end. I can see how so many modern books are Rebecca-coded, and I love that Daphne du Maurier provided a framework for a gothic vibe drama about a new bride obssessed with the shadow she is living under and trying to find her own place in the world. I would love to read some of the modern versions, I think they'd be more up my alley.

This is one of the few classics I managed to finish, as the descriptions were not too drawn out and served to set the scene for the eery nature of the book. A gripping mystery for people who don't like to go full Stephen King!
