Yikes! This does not hold up.

I read this in middle school when ~*I’m not like other girls*~ was a way of life, and I when it was en vogue to hate other women. Then again, this was written in the late 90’s so, it’s almost as old as I am. So much does not age well, such as our heroine being a Hugh schooler (16? 17? 18? We never find out despite her having a birthday on page! Though, I’m 90% sure she’s supposed to be 16) and our hero ultimately being 24. Yikes! Boys being men at 21, but girls being women at 16? Yikes! Gabriel killing his first love in a rage? Yikes! So many yikes! But this imprinted into my lizard brain, so, alas, I don’t hate it. I just would never recommend or let my niece read this when she’s of an impressionable age.

I'm not sure if my problems with this book were more about the writing or the narration. The narration made it sound cheesy and over the top. It had its moments but overall it was a letdown.

I really enjoyed this one. I can see how others might have been annoyed by Vivian being super beautiful and aggressive creep, but I think it would have been bizarre if she hadn't been. She's not a 'normal teenage girl turning into a wolf' - if anything, she's more like a wolf that can take human shape - and I appreciated that difference.

If you see a wolf in the wild, you don't think "gosh, that's a homely wolf" or "wow that wolf has a lot of character flaws." Nope. She's a wild creature in a human skin, and it makes sense that she would be beautiful and arrogant and draw every eye. It makes sense that she would think like a dominant predator, and that she, and her whole clan, would be creepers and behave in ways that would be strange and unacceptable to humans.

I also really liked the change from the usual love story. It's not how I expected things to go, and I love that in a book.

Honestly the only thing I'm mad about is the lack of a sequel.

This book is bad in much the same way that Twilight is bad, but it was a gift and a favorite from a friend and though the characters could be the Trademarked descriptions for Problematic™️, those last 100 or so pages hit me and I wound up really enjoying it!

This is a reread from childhood so 4 stars may be mostly due to nostalgia?? Especially since
the main character is like 16/17 and gets with a 24 year old (woah yikes!).
But u know what aside from that this shit rocked, I had a grand old time. It felt so different from other paranormals especially being YA. I loved how these werewolves were actually dangerous and legitimately wolf-like.

I don’t love this book but I do like it and I think what kept me from loving it, despite the beautiful metaphors and deadly werewolves, were the characters. I couldn’t relate to any of the characters or connect with them, they were all very well developed and I could believe that they were actual people but they weren’t people that I would ever want to meet. Vivian our heroine is very confidant she knows that any boy would want her and any boy should want her and this instantly put me off her. I think it’s because I couldn’t relate to her at all which is what kept me from loving her story.

But it was a very good story and I am glad I stuck with it. A very hot read and it’s what I usually expect from a werewolf book – fighting, killing, lusting, and loyalty to the ones you call family.

I basically started skimming after chapter 7. Not a fan of the writing because it seems a bunch is missing but maybe it's to make up as a YA novel (even though there's an age gap relationship with Gabriel and Viv) to speed things along. I can tell just by some books I've read in the 90's from YA. It just didn't work for me. I totally wasn't expecting the ending though.
