I might have had a bit of high expectations for this danmei, cause I really didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would TT

To be fair this was very much a “this just isn’t for me” story (considering it’s heavy on the sci-fi), but at the same time it felt like a lot of what happened, happened for nothing and there wasn’t much purpose to the story. The main plot is An Zhe searching for his spore, but most of the story has nothing to do with that and it feels like they’re just passing time, and only at the end of the book we see development in An Zhe finding his spore. Not to say I didn’t enjoy the book, it has its good moments and I liked how a lot of chapters ended on a big reveal or plot twist that made you curious to read more. But at the same time sometimes it was so hard to pick up the book back again.

Now I know this is a danmei, and they’re usually very soft on the romance, but the romance here was basically non existing. An Zhe and Lu Feng would look at each other, there would be some soft touches, I mean there was even a “only one bed” scene, but none of it felt romantic. Maybe because An Zhe was just learning how to be human and all these feelings were new to him, maybe because Lu Feng was just a cold person, idk. You could tell how much Lu Feng cared about An Zhe with how he was always making sure he was safe, but that’s about it.

My favorite part of the book was definitely An Zhe, I really liked his characters and character development.

i had heard nothing but good things about this book coming into it, but i did not realize just how good it is
little mushroom is immediate immersive in its sci-fi, dystopic setting, beginning with an zhe's creation, and it pulls no punches as the story goes along. i loved seeing an zhe's relationship with lu feng slowly develop and shift, and i can't wait to read the second half

I need more Lu Feng. Like hearing what other people say about him vs. how he is like with people he cares about !! My favorite trope <33

This was an interesting book.  I read it for a reading challenge and it was recommended by my 22 year old daughter, so it was not something I would normally read.  But it was well translated and an interesting dystopian story.  It is imaginative and I liked how they explained how the world became the way it was.

Second Read Feb 2025:
I'm still just as obsessed the second time around <3

First read Sept 2024:
I'm absolutely OBSESSED WITH THIS

this story is somehow so so endearing about this little mushroom who just wants to get his baby back while also being so intense and insane with stakes that just get higher and higher (but also feel very natural and make a lot of sense)

I absolutely love our characters and the romance so far, but story is also just SO GOOD like world is so well developed and the actual plot is so good and the romance is so good but the story can stand on its own without the romance. That's the type of romance I like where yes the romance is amazing love it A+ but the story can stand alone without the romance yk?

This world especially is so incredibly unique and interesting and I think I could read about our lil mushroom boy and his story without Lu Feng at all (even though I also love him and love their dynamic!), seeing this world and humanity through An Zhe is just so fascinating and I'm loving it

I'll be diving into book 2 immediately - I need to know what happens next!!!
