I started this because I was fascinated by the idea of a protagonist who is a mushroom, and I was not disappointed. The story is very intriguing and I immediately ordered the second part upon almost finishing this. The world created here is fascinating in both a wondrous and haunting way. It feels both very violent and worth exploring. It also keeps surprising me in good ways how the mushroom protagonist responds to situations he ends up in. And also how others respond to him!
Very excited to start reading the final part of the story soon.

The world building is unique and creative. I really grew to love the characters; they were revealed a little at a time.

This looks like a cute novel from the cover, and while it definitely is in some ways, it's also a great story that tackles post-apocalyptic war and humanity issues as well. I really liked this story! On to vol. 2

I started reading the manhua first, but it was releasing too slowly for my tastes so I hopped over to the novel to binge read. I found the title in the first place because I was searching for a plant protagonist, mushrooms aren't plants but still it fit the criteria.
One thing that I love and appreciate (even though it sometimes hurts) about Chinese novels is that anyone can die. Another thing is all the things that most often get left unsaid.
I read both novels back to back so I can't quite distinguish where one stopped and the other began, but no one was safe in these books except the Little Mushroom and the Lu Feng. No one. As soon as you start liking a character they were doomed to die for the most part. Sometimes it was obvious other times it wasn't and rather sudden.
The little mushroom was so naive about humans and the human world and it was interesting to see things from his perspective as the narraitve played out and it's easy to imagine how the others might have percieved his calm standoffishness whenever something that would warrant a certain reaction occured but our mushroom was merely a quiet observer. His only motive was his spore and he just went along with everything trying to get it back.
The setting too was very unique and very well detailed interms of the science beheind the apoloypic events that took place and it's progression and present impact. As a physics major the scientific descriptions had me engaged and the wheels in my head turning. It might be offputting or overwhelming to some but I liked it. The author really put a lot of effort into the world building and it clearly showed. Nothing was quite left to interpretation or some vague discription, it was well spelt out.
The characters are also very well developed, and there's a lot of depth to them, even some of the characters we see for a brief moment were splendedly presented. The relationship between the mushroom and Lu Feng could sort of be described as grumpy x sunshine where Lu Feng is the grump...a very tolerant grump who helps An Zhe naviate the new world he's a part of despite all the warning signs that An Zhe gives off that he's not normal. But I will say that it's also a slow burn and they weren't were burning until the second half of the second book.
Needless to say, despite all the death, looming death and the harsh realities of a post-apocalyptic world, it was a wholesome read. Nothing cued an 'aww' like the often repeated line "But he was just a little mushroom," because he was just a little mushroom in the big harsh world.
I'm still going to read the manhua as chapters release and it might compel me to reread sometime in the future. I wouldn't doubt it.
