"You're just... a tiny little mushroom" -Chapter 1
This story has gone and rocked my world. Disclaimer: This is originally a Chinese novel, hence, I believe that the English translation isn't excellent. It is decent at best.
Also, I am reader that prefers characterizations than immaculate or complex world building.
This is up there with Heaven's Official Blessing and The Husky and his White Cat Shizun for me. My current danmei holy trinity.
The premise is simple enough. A mushroom is pretending to be a human to get his spore back from a human who stole it and who is licensed to kill his kind.
I read this story when I was new to danmei and it has a fan translation at the time. One review did warn me that the summary might be lighthearted but the actual content isn't. Since I was new to danmei, I really didn't know that if a novel has angst, IT REALLY HAS ANGST! Like, I cried like a bitch. I've read this 3x and still cried. Because of the translation, the prose seems real simple but it might be really the case with the Chinese version? I don't know though this novel did win an award in China. So I think the prose is nice and it might be that since the protagonist is mushroom, his point of view is plain and straightforward.
An Zhe's character lacks complexity especially in the first book and this is part of his charm. Nevertheless, he genuinely like humans and his connection with An Ze is nothing short of special. I remember that the first chapter is such a standout that it became one of my favorite book opening for a long time.
Lu Feng's character is steadfast and self assured. Though, a little mushroom can bend him like a wind bending a bamboo. Some might say that he is too strong and that is a valid criticism. However! He doesn't shy away with showing vulnerability to people who matters to him.
There are other characters as well but the main focus is definitely with the two. In short, this is highly recommended!
Will continue my review on the second book.
