The story is intriguing but the rest is … vague. Science? Vague. Technical details? Vague. Emotions? Vague (one character is a mushroom and the other a sociopath, perhaps). Personality? Vague. The translation was especially inadequate. Minimum vocabulary & you can feel like it’s a simplification/approximation of something else. I won’t be reading the second volume.

I really liked what was going on with An Zhe, the bits of existentialism and the meaning of being human. I was looking forward to meeting the love interest, Lu Feng, but turns out I absolutely hated him. Like, this cold man with power above the law, above any checks, that can just kill who he deems necessary without question? I don't want him to find redemption as the love interest. No matter how guilty he feels about what he does, or even if every single time he was right about a person's mutation. No matter if his personality changes. I'm probably even more sensitive to it right now, but the implications that message had to real life felt bad.

It reminded me of folks that try to tell you if we just befriend the oppressors or the agents of oppression they'll change their ways. I couldn't keep reading without feeling horrible dread.
