I'm just glad Calla got to work through her trauma and freed herself. But, damn, it was hard.
This isn't horror in the normal sense of the word. It has more to do with: to what length are you able to go to protect those you love? And what are you willing to lose in the process?
It was a hard read, mostly because I'm an older sister. I felt some of the pain and frustration that Calla went through. Is isn't easy, but I'm honestly glad she got to have a "happy" ending.

Listen to your sister hits the mark for being a proper horror novel. Eliciting several "oh my gods" throughout the book, and yet not being too gory for my tastes made it what I would call the perfect late summer screamer.
It took me a few chapters to properly get into it, but once I did I found it hard to put down. I finished the second half in one day.
I enjoyed the writing style, the family history seamlessly interwoven with the plot, and the bonds forged. Listen to your sister has excellent character development.
Listen to your Sister is a grand slam of a debut.

It was not what I imagined it would be. Not my type of book. And I the end I'm still confused, especially about what really happened that night that started the nightmare.

"Gangsta shit and stardust"
Wow, this was such an interesting way to dive into the family trauma - A sister giving up so much to help raise her brothers, the brothers not appreciating all that she did for them, not acknowledge how much Calla gave up and endured, trauma, parental abandonment. Whew! And during all of that, still so much comical and realistic sibling dialogue lol
At first I was confused by this book and I found it hard to get into. Part 2-3 is what did it for me.
In the end it was very sweet!
