swaps positions with her brother since he wants to be a sorcerer and her a knight
she’ll be a knight but won’t be confined to temple grounds like the women warriors
she learns how to fight from a thief and a knight to beat her bully who’s bigger and stronger than her
she saves the prince with her healing gift
binds her chest and hates that her breasts are coming in
they’ll think she’s soft and weak if they knew her gender
tells the king of thieves her secret and it’s hard for her to say “i’m a girl”. he doesn’t let her see him dress after that, already treating her differently, lets her pass letters to her brother tho
she gets her period and is confused/hates it and wishes her gift could take it away
gets a contraception charm and she expresses not wanting kids
thinks it’s not fair she was born a girl, everyone else tells her it hasn’t slowed her down
plans to come out at 18 when she gets knighted
spans 10-13, detailing her life and adventures guy as a page
coram is reminded she’s a girl when she mentions what the duke was wearing
some good foreshadowing with the omniscient perspective
gets a magical sword named lightning and a horse named midnight
being close friends with the prince reminds me of song of achilles
she suffers from imposter syndrome and practices harder than others to make up for her short stature and femaleness
prince jonathan and alanna defeat the black city with the help of the gods, her Gift protects her
sexism when the ysandir find out she’s a girl
he also doesn’t want her watching him bathe now that he knows she’s a girl, she doesn’t want him to treat her differently, she doesn’t want him to see her bathe
prince jon chooses her as his squire and she’s the finest page/squire at court
interesting hearing other peoples thoughts on alan
excited to read what’s next for alan/alanna
she seems to not mind being called a boy. not sure if gender fluid or just hates the limitations of her gender
doesn’t shy away from implications of puberty which makes this hold up well today

Quite dull; a setup for future volumes which I shan’t be reading. Favorite character: the brother

On the whole this book was enjoyable, but there were definitely some parts that felt rather rushed.

5 stars because it's a childhood favorite.
I can't remember when I first read this series – must have been primary school. It was fun to revisit the quartet for an easy and entertaining read.
