This is one of the books I read in my formative years that I've reread several times since. While red-haired twins with purple eyes (and magic!) has become a fantasy cliche, it was still magical when I was reading this series. This series worked as a good stepping stone for me to Mercedes Lackey's original series (The Queen's Own, The Last Herald Mage) about the Heralds of Valdemar.

This review is for the full quartet. I enjoyed this series as a kid and wanted to give it a re-read. There are still elements I like or at least feel nostalgic about. The series starts off solidly for YA fantasy but the character motivations and plot points become frustrating by the end of the series. Thom and Roger are ridiculous. George is pushy and creepy when Alanna is 15, and Jonathan turns into a moody boy. There are some cultural and gender-related points that didn’t age well either. All and all I’m glad I re-read them and may do it again in another 15 years though.
