I don't think this is a perfect first book, there's a lot of mythology that happens in the last fourth of the book and a problem that gets resolved in seemingly minutes by children (so if you had a problem with Harry Potter, that's this book but Pierce did it first), but I think that for what Pierce was doing and when she was doing it, it's a classic.
