Not my favorite YA fantasy. It was too simplistic, predictable, and the characters were not complex. I'd much rather read the [b:The Deed of Paksenarrion|96281|The Deed of Paksenarrion (The Deed of Paksenarrion, #1-3)|Elizabeth Moon|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1400873078s/96281.jpg|92896] trilogy again than continue in this series.

I had never read anything by Tamora Pierce before, and as a fantasy lover, I felt like it was time, since she's one of the more popular fantasy writers. After reading this one, I can say that I will definitely continue reading this author.
This was a really short book, and it didn't take me very long at all to read it, but I really enjoyed the story. It was fun, and I think it's one of those that years later I'll remember bits and pieces from it, and try to remember what book that was. Does that happen to any other readers?
The characters were well done, and I really liked Alanna. She was a great character that you want to root for. The secondary characters were interesting and not one-dimensional like I've read in other YA fantasy. There was a lot going on here in this little book, and I'm excited to read more to see what other things are in store for Alanna, and if she can keep her secret.
I would recommend this to fans of fantasy, if there are any out there besides me who've never read it. It's a quick, easy read, so it's definitely worth a try!

One of my favourite book since I'm a kid. I'm still loving it as an adult.
