I really enjoyed this one and I think it still holds up quite well. I feel like the world especially has a lot of potential to get deeper in the sequels and in other series set in this world. I'm excited to continue on.
What a nice little book! Perfect for the ages it caters to, I would have really liked to read it when I was a kid.

ㅤㅤAfter finishing, I can't say there was even a single thing genuinely exciting in this book. Even after I finish a badly written book, I have a hefty list of things I don't want to see in my future reading, but this book is just pure *unexcitement*.
ㅤㅤThroughout the book we have some heterosexual vibes going on for Alanna and the boys surrounding her, and while 1. I don't hate romance and 2. she's not flat out attracted to anyone, I don't see the necessity for suggestive romantic writing, when Alanna is 10 (to 11) years old and it won't lead to anything at the present time.
ㅤㅤI started this book without knowing anything about it and was at first excited about the gender-bend aspect of the novel, but it soon disappointed me. The plot/story read as if the author had had a checklist of the things that must happen in a gender-bender and those were fulfilled. Nothing surprised me. Also, the 'first adventure', which was supposedly the culmination of the book, felt like it was inserted as an afterthought. There wasn't a good build up.
ㅤㅤI don't want to reread this book in depth and drag out all the monsters from the closet, so instead of saying this book was vaguely sexist, I'll suffice myself by saying that it wasn't gender/sex-challenging (something one would expect from this type of book).
