The first fantasy series I ever fell in love with and after this reread can confidently say I’m still in love with this story and characters just as much today

Read for Popsugar: A popular author's first book
I've somehow never read Tamora Pierce, but I am here finally! I really enjoyed this one and love our spunky heroine. I'm a little sad I missed it as a kid - I think younger Sara would have loved it.

Me da mucha pena que solo exista la traducción de la primera parte de esta saga. Es el tipo de libro que me habría marcado la infancia y adolescencia. Muy ameno y fácil de leer, y la protagonista es genial.
A fantasy classic. I was 15 years old when this book was published, which means I was a couple years too old to relate to Alanna, in all her ten year old glory. Now, in my 30s - well, I still don’t completely relate, but I do recognize this as the kind of book a young girl could hold like a bible and read over and over again.
The characters are so lovable. The fiery persistent girl that is Alanna, fighting to find her place among a world of men. Watching her rise to the challenge, time and again, and not without her own share of failure - but half the fun is in seeing her learn and work for it. There’s steady mentor figures of all stripes. A gang of loyal friends. All the things any young person wants and needs, even if they don’t fully know it themselves.
Alanna Book 1 was a friggin’ delight, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this quartet.
(Also - I vaguely knew Tamora Pierce is a legend in the fantasy publishing world, but wow - her author’s note, written nine years after the book was initially published, gives me a whole new appreciation for her work.)
