Always love Tamora Pierce's books. My friends and I connected over them as kids, and when i meet other young women, we connect as adults.

- This was just as good 22+ years after I first read it
- I really don't like the new cover art though

I could see this being entertaining as a first time fantasy novel for a kid. It hits about every cliche in the genre, and the writing is really not good. But it's a fun story that's quick to read, without much in the way of adult content. Kids can't start with Game of Thrones.

One of my favorites from childhood. Just read it to my kids and they're in love with Alanna.

DnF. It was okay. Recommended for 12 and up.

explains a lot of things about some of my friends

This series never fails me. I’ve reread it many times. A simple yet satisfying plot and good, clear writing.

My 10-year-old and I talked about how the character development in this novel is pretty slim. That said we both really enjoyed the book and my daughter absolutely wants to read the rest of the series as do I. It’s a terrific book about a super strong girl. There’s not a lot of nuances but I really appreciated the scene when she gets her period. There is lots of warmth to many of the characters and good relationships, it’s just not that fleshed out.
