Alanna rocks. She wants to be a knight, even though her father wants to send her off to a convent. Magic isn't enough for her, she wants to wield a sword in battle. I love how she takes on a male persona, and we see the challenges she faces along this course.

When I saw this was written in 1983 I could only wonder how I had missed it. I was 11 then, and this book would have been PERFECT for me!

So glad that the ALA Edwards award to Tamora Pierce bumped this up my TBR list.

kinda boring even though i enjoyed bits of it.

Alanna by Tamora Pierce is a thrilling and empowering coming-of-age story that follows the journey of a young girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to become a knight. Alanna is determined, brave, and fiercely independent, and her journey is filled with challenges, friendships, and adventures.

The world-building in this book is impressive, with a richly detailed and immersive fantasy setting. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the plot is engaging and full of twists and turns.

Overall, Alanna is a fantastic read for fans of fantasy and adventure, and is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers of all ages. It's a must-read for anyone looking for a strong, inspiring female protagonist who isn't afraid to break the rules and forge her own path

Lean but forceful young adult writing. Unburdened by faddish modern world-building, it jumps straight to the point and develops its world through characters, allowing us to sense larger contexts of gender roles, political intrigue and diplomatic relations via interaction and dialogue.

I wish that I had found this book when I was a kid! It's the perfect coming of age story for girls. Alanna wants to be a knight, but is being sent to a convent by her disinterested father. Her twin, Thom, wants to be a sorcerer, but is being sent to knight school. Alanna dresses as a boy and they switch places and destinies. Set in a medieval fantasy world, this is a great set up for the quartet. Alanna starts as a 10 year old and finishes this book at 13 or 14. She deals with her body changing as she learns how to be an amazing fighter through determination and grit. Her focus is on being the best she can be and proving herself...not on crushes or looks. There are great side characters who show her friendship and respect. I bought the whole series and am gifting it to my daughter for her 13th birthday this weekend. I think she will love it. Highly recommend.
